It’s no secret: office cubicles are perhaps the most boring of all office furniture. They’re typically bland, gray, and very small. However, there are many companies out there that realize that office cubicles can have a bad impact on company morale, and they’ve gone the extra step to make their business’s cubicles as funky—and inspiring—as possible. Following are our favorite three funky office cubicle concepts:
1. Step back into the ’70s
In 2006, design company Steelcase created a variety of conceptual office cubicles to be displayed at their Chicago showroom during NeoCon, a furniture tradeshow. One of the most popular concepts was the Studio 53 concept (yes, that name is a reference to the club, Studio 54, which was notorious in New York in the 1970s). The interior of the cubicle was lined with plush red carpeting and adorned with comfy white pillows—the ultimate casual lounge cubicle.
2. Be one with nature
The Selgas Cano Architecture Office in Madrid decided to bring its employees into nature in order to help boost morale. In order to do this, they brought on designer Iwan Baan to create a row of partially-glass office cubicles set smack dab in the middle of the forest. The “cubicles” are lined up in a row, complete with clear ceilings and void of separating walls. The result is a naturally bright, airy space that anyone would want to work in.
3. Have the ability to move anywhere
Kithaus offers modular prefab cubicle kits that are nine-feet-by-thirteen-feet and can pretty much go anywhere. With these cubicles, you can work in your backyard—no foundation is needed. This means that you can bring your work with you wherever you go (although we can’t imagine that the setting up and breaking down of the mobile office cubicle is a lot of fun).
